About Three Sweeties

Three Sweeties is a company which is all about giving people exactly what they want: not only in terms of flavour and design, but also in terms of personal service.

I started Three Sweeties with the intention of making cakes that look good, taste good, and encourage my clients to come back because of the great experience they received. It's no longer just me working on my own at my kitchen table, but the passion and motivation which led me to start the business remain an integral part of the company's culture.

I started decorating cakes as a hobby when I was a teenager. I was about 15 when I made the very first one, for my older sister's wedding shower. It was two heart-shaped cakes stacked and decorated with a lot of red gel icing I bought at the supermarket. Sadly there are no photos of that cake, but I can clearly remember my hands shaking terribly as I piped the border around the edge. It probably looked pretty terrible, but it was a labour of love and started a life-long affair with making sweet, beautiful art (and yes, my sister does like to brag that she was the first ever recipient of a cake of mine).

I started Three Sweeties originally as a hobby business, which I did in the hours between working full-time as a chef and being a mother and wife. As time has gone on, I've left the chef work behind and now work full time from commercial premises, employ other talented people to help with the baking and icing, and love every minute of what I do. I honestly believe I have the best job in the world.

Who are the other two sweeties?

Many people ask me this question assuming that I started the business with two other women. The actual three sweeties are my triplet children, Alexis, Julian and Claire. From the beginning they were my inspiration: I wanted to be an example for them as a successful, capable working mother. I started Three Sweeties when they were just born and these days they love to tell people, "my mummy makes amazing cakes!" I've even had mothers approach me in the school-yard to ask for a business card because my kids were talking up the work I do. By far they are my harshest critics and my most enthusiastic cheerleaders - they tell me when they don't like a cake I've made, and they cheer me on when I need encouragement after a long week.

Do your kids get the best birthday cakes?

Yes, but finding the time to do them is getting harder as they get older! They each get their own cake to a design of their choice, and each year their requests get more demanding. I have yet to master the "standing-up 3D ballerina teddy bear spinning and doing a pirouette" my daughter asked for, but I'm sure I will get there. Heaven help me when it comes to their weddings! Maybe I'll be in retirement by then?!

What makes Three Sweeties different from other cake businesses?

Three Sweeties makes cakes with personality... However, the business is about so much more than cake: it's about the overall experience. Our customers are getting a unique experience, and we're giving them a unique product. There are no cakes available for purchase from the shop because we pride ourselves on our baking and decorating entirely to order. I think my clients deserve the very best experience I can give them - from their initial phone call or email all the way through to the event and beyond. If for some reason we can't achieve what you're after, we'll tell you what we can do for you. We won't make promises we can't keep, won't say we can do something when we can't, and above all we'll make sure you're getting the very best experience we can give.

Do you love what you do? Why?

In a word, yes. Why? Because I love knowing that the things Three Sweeties produces brings people joy and happiness. We get to be a part of the milestone celebrations in people's lives, and that our clients entrust us with that honour is something we take very seriously. I have many clients whose wedding cakes I made, and now I am creating their children's Christening cakes and birthday cakes - these wonderful people have invited me into their homes, let me play with their children, and introduced me to their friends. Their love, appreciation, gratitude and support for what I do is what makes my job so fulfilling.
